A study in the Criminology & Public Policy journal published last year looked at 70 other studies into body-worn cameras and found the technology had statistically insignificant impacts on police and citizen behaviour.

" will not be an easy panacea for improving police performance, accountability, and relationships with citizens," the study said.

Minneapolis police officers involved in the May arrest of George Floyd were wearing body cameras as one of them knelt on the Black man's neck for several minutes and he died. "Body-worn cameras not only create concerns about the public's privacy rights but can also affect how officers relate to people in the community, the community's perception of the police, and expectations about how police agencies should share information," the report said.

Recently, many communities have changed their positions on cameras. Toronto Mayor John Tory said he expects to have cameras on officers by the fall and Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante said the technology will be adopted as soon as possible. The RCMP has also committed to outfitting some officers with cameras.

Laming said there isn't transparency about police force policies on cameras, such as ensuring public privacy, who gets access to the video or when officers are required to turn them on.

Missing the point of body cams. And I wonder if that conclusion was also drawn following an internal investigation as well?

Because that’s not the problem.

Definitely doesn’t and why all the bull— everyone is armed with a cell phone, save the money put it into supporting law enforcement in other areas!!

Maybe it won't reduce it - although hard to see how that could be. But at least the ambiguities will be reduced.

However if used and on it does and has caught police in several wrongdoings Also makes police and some civilians slow their actions realizing their actions will be on video. HOWERVER cameras must not have off switch when worn

I think it's more useful evidence for the victims of police brutality more than anything. Imagine the amount of police brutality that has gone on with no video proof where the officers had no repercussions.

That may be, but theyre very helpful in holding those officers accountable for that violence. Dont ya think?

Police procedure is that when someone is arrested they are hand cuffed, if hand cuffed they are searched. Anyone who doesn’t like that process and fights back they could be charged with obstruction, assault and other charges. Simple procedure for officer safety. Don’t resist.

Maybe not but it could be the proof of a crime being perpetrated in real time . So this story is absolutely false . The bad cop's just don't want them for this problem.

Reducing police will reduce police violence. Making police pay for their own insurance and uninsurable ones/those with past complaints won’t be able to work will reduce police violence. Changing police academy to be as long as law school will reduce police violence

Maybe because their actions are justified more often than not?

Looks like they forget the initial pupose of the body cam! It was supposed to be evidence about he/said she/said. They weren’t meant to end police violence!

The point isn't stopping police violence although that would be nice, the point is having video evidence of what they are doing while arresting people so the bad ones get taken out of the force. That's how you change the culture.

They would at least provide unbiased evidence.

the studies are wrong -

No but it will help to say who's in the wrong

Police officers will likely ask for 30% raises if orders to wear.....

At least it protects the Cops from Criminals. More evidence to put the criminals away which we all know CTV loves on our streets.

Maybe but they answer some questions that the cop and suspect can’t provide

Hmmm maybe not reduction in violence but certainly evidence to keep cops accountable and/or exonerate a cop that has done their job in a appropriate way. Every cop should wear a camera and fired if they turn it off.

Contrary to what the Liberal hacks at CTV are telling you, the primary advantage of body cams and dash cams is to prevent thugs from falsely accusing cops of wrongdoing.

As the majority of violence is perpetually committed by criminals duh...

It’s not about “reducing violence” it’s about accountability for inappropriate violence.

Body cams aren’t a panacea to reduce police brutality. Rather, they are an accountability check. You have to conduct extensive background checks on every officer to root out the racists first. Then you have to dismantle the Blue Shield culture, which protects bad cops.

But it raises accountability

CTV IS HATE MEDIA

Social workers reduce police violence.

But they are excellent evidence when it comes down to the officers word against yours

The same was said with ubiquitous CCTV in London. But here we are. Besides if the people paying them say wear them, then they fngg wear them.

It may not reduce the violence but we'll know who to blame.

Gun crime is up 20% in left wing dump, Toronto. Ever since the gun ban.

Let's try it anyways

That is ridiculous. That doesn't pass the laugh test.

I watched the video from police interaction with Elijah McClain - an unarmed man, who committed no crime died after police officers stopped him walking home from a store. Two of the three officers happened to have their body cameras “fall off” during the incident.

Because cops know that in spite of incontrovertible evidence of their crimes, they are unlikely to be held to account.

Just goes to show that its allegations that rule, not proof when video is taken.

Maybe but will tell the whole story. Cell phones only tell part of the story . Plus need not defund the police 🚔. Need to defund the blue shield union. So you can fire the bad cops

I don't believe a study like this can be honest or accurate in such a short time with such a limited data pool. This just reads like another anti-police narrative.

Police use of force during arrests.

Can't body cameras just be turned off?

It's not the cameras, it's what happens afterward Gotta work on the follow through

Do they increase police accountability?

Cameras catch the cop committing violence.

Makes them accountable though

That’s because per interaction there is very little violence. With hundreds of millions of interactions a year in North America, there is an exceptionally tiny amount of police violence.

By earring body cam, are police violence increased? If not, wear the cams. Who did the study? A grade five D- student?

No but gives some good evidence of what happens.

That's on the cops then for being too stupid to not change their behavior. The one benefit of body cams is Accountability.

Oh the quandary. 'cops are violent racists!'. 'They must have body cams so we can catch them in the act!' Wait a minute. Then we can't falsely claim they were racial profiling...what do we do? I got it, lets claim that the cams don't work so there's no evidence. Got it? Got it.

Probably not, but ACCOUNTABILITY Will Lower Police Violence and will StopPoliceBrutality but unfortunately our government doesn't see it that way.

Police brutality caught on civilian camera phones, up to and including murder, almost never bring consequences for the criminals in blue so why would body cameras? Throw them in prison for their crimes and their behaviour will change quickly.

Maybe, but at least theres footage for the courts

This is a load of BS if they had cameras that show the actual facts what happened but I guess in this day and age it doesn’t matter because you could follow the law still be accused of murder If Black Lives Matter promote it enough

MeritLaw grassroots_law 1. Make PO FULLY accountable instead of hiding behind unions. 2. Fired means fired; not another job at different precinct 3. Guilty/fired ones lose pension & benefits 4.Suspended WITHOUT pay, its not a damn vacation. 5. Non biased n smarter jurors

Suddenly one community which is more suceptuble to crime complains and the world needs to change. Cops are like every other profession. Criminals, well before you call me racist - check stats

Stop letting cops off the hook when their bad behaviour is caught on camera. Cameras will only work if cops are finally charged for breaking the laws they say they uphold but don't

It’s not a matter of body cameras reducing crime. It’s for holding cops accountable if they are doing the job improperly or at the same time helping them justify their actions they take in different scenarios. It’s not meant to reduce crime.

Don't fit that narrative ctv. In the current climate they are much needed so cops can do their job and speed up these frivolous allegations

I don't think that's the purpose of body cameras. Body cameras are necessary for a police force that needs to be transparent to the public.

We should make crime illegal, that would stop it. Oh wait...

CTV did a interview with a criminologist from the University of Alberta that came to the same conclusions. It came out about two weeks ago.

They just turn body cams off when they want to do something illegal. It's all the rest of us who need body cams

Maybe we should have less criminals?

It's proof of what happens, pro and con.
