The Senators, a once-proud organization representing Canada’s capital, dream of a single sellout. With crowds at record low levels to start the year, their owner may be part of the issue. (hockeyscanner)

said afterwards, referencing the bad old days of the Blackhawks when Bill Wirtz was owner. After Wirtz’s death in 2007, the Blackhawks underwent a resurgence and the club won Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Last season, Chicago averaged 22,734 fans, best in the NHL, despite missing the playoffs. This week the Blackhawks celebrated their 500th consecutive sellout.

With season ticket sales at an all-time low , attendance is going to be a concern in the nation’s capital all season. A 1-4 start to the season doesn’t help, but beyond a bump here and there as some of the young talent emerges and the rebuilding Senators establish an identity, an overriding issue is a stigma around ownership of the team.

The Senators rely on having an entertaining product, good relations between the players and the community, and marketing a few star players. This past season, the departures of Karlsson, Stone and Matt Duchene turned off a lot of fans and it may require a change at the highest level before fans buy into the vision of a major rebuild. The Senators worked on special teams throughout training camp and seem to have them half right.

HockeyScanner Oh, ow worship is the blame up there, but down here the game just isn’t loved/doesn’t belong.

HockeyScanner That's sad. They have some good pieces. What else is there to do in Ottawa? Melnyk won't be there much longer. Don't lose your team over it

HockeyScanner There's definitely the issue of ownership trying to take a crap on the fans and using excuses like location for the low attendance. I don't believe the location is an issue, it's Melnyk being a toxic shithead while running a cheapskate operation that the fans hate.

mannyelk HockeyScanner Good.

HockeyScanner Good article. This is entirely and directly tied to ownership and how they have handled things. New owner = new life for the Sens

HockeyScanner Move them to Canada! That's what you motherfuckers always tell us here in Florida.

HockeyScanner Get rid of Melnyk and things will improve worstnhlownerever

HockeyScanner 'With crowds at record low levels to start the year, ownership is FULLY to blame.' Fixed. Sens

HockeyScanner The Ottawa Senators are a sorry excuse for a hockey team! No wonder the fans don't show up. The sports channels and the NHL force people to watch the Senators if you are in the Ottawa viewing area. Can't watch a real hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. UNCANADIAN EH !!!!

HockeyScanner Much better wording 👍

HockeyScanner

HockeyScanner Love the Sens, need the owner out.

HockeyScanner *part*? Ya think?

HockeyScanner is

Hot take: Melnyk might be bad 🔥🔥🔥gotem

HockeyScanner The owner is the issue....fixed it for you

HockeyScanner 'May' and 'part.' Awful.

HockeyScanner 'May be part of the issue'. Really? Who else would be to blame?

HockeyScanner You say 'may', so it sounds like you have no definite proof, you're just speculating and throwing ideas out to see what sticks. Not very professional. Have you even read your own article? Shameful.

HockeyScanner PART of the issue ?

HockeyScanner saying melnyk may be part of the issue is like saying extreme heat and smoke inhalation may be the cause of death in a portapotty fire

HockeyScanner part of the issue really lol🤔

HockeyScanner Owner is the only issue .....

HockeyScanner MELNYK IS THE ISSUE

HockeyScanner He's not part of the issue he IS the issue

HockeyScanner Melnyk gets a liver while others die waiting. Why would people dislike him?

HockeyScanner Even Montreal is not selling out... it's not just an Ottawa problem... habs ch sens

HockeyScanner “May be part of the issue.” 🧐

HockeyScanner Seriously may be “part “of the issue

HockeyScanner Just wait until MapleLeafs play you, guaranteed to sell out!

HockeyScanner He is THE problem! MelnykOut

HockeyScanner MelnykOut

HockeyScanner Not unrelated, but location is also key. Making it to the game and back on a weeknight is an adventure in itself, and not a fun one at that. Parking 417

HockeyScanner Good read

HockeyScanner may?
