Steven Guilbeault counting on carbon capture, EV push to cut emissions

An emissions reduction plan due this month, as required by net-zero legislation enacted last year, will map out specific actions the government will take to meet its goal of cutting emissions 40 per cent to 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.

It also won’t be cheap. The total spending — from both governments and businesses — needed over the next three decades to get Canada to net zero is $2 trillion, according to a Royal Bank of Canada report last fall, which it said translates to at least $60 billion a year in spending given current technologies.

Guilbeault, 51, a former Greenpeace activist who was once arrested for scaling the CN Tower in Toronto, said Canada can’t reach its targets without tackling emissions in its oil and gas sector. Energy production accounts for 10 per cent of the nation’s total economic output.

High and unpredictable oil and gas prices are a big incentive to going electric, seems to me.

The only way to decarbonize our energy needs is to more fully embrace nuclear generation. Something Guilbeault doesn't (or refuses to) understand.
