Harper said the contest to lead the party is filled with strong candidates, but one stands out — his former cabinet minister Pierre Poilievre

Harper’s endorsement comes with less than two months left in the race, and as party members are in the process of filling out their mail-in ballots.

The race to lead Harper’s former party has been characterized as a battle for its very soul and at times included some personal attacks between candidates. Poilievre has been criticized by ex-Quebec premier Jean Charest, who is also a candidate in the leadership race, and others for having ideas and a tone that would make the Conservatives unable to win the next general election after three consecutive losses. The former prime minister says Poilievre not only has the strongest support within the party’s caucus of any candidate in the race, but is popular with existing members and is bringing in droves of new ones.

“Conservatives only win when we are united. Stephen Harper was successful in uniting the Conservative Party of Canada. As the leader of the CPC, I commit to doing the same,” Charest’s statement said. “This race is about the future, right now, we have a choice: lose more seats or build on our momentum across Canada to win a majority government.”

Now’s a good time to get our media out of foreign hands.

He paid up

Cool. I mailed in my ballot today voting for Pierre before I saw this

is it just me, or is good ole globalist harper, starting to look like bill clinton?

My God Harper wouldn't no who be best for the conservative party his wife still dressing him.

Didn’t you lose your job? Why are you still talking?

If that BitCon is the best chance for Conservatives to win the next election, Canada is safe.

Remember when the world had a economic meltdown in 2008 and here in Canada we didn’t hardly realize it..yeah that because Harper a economist was running the Country

The Pope would have an easier time getting the Indigenous vote.

That’s a death knell for C’s , lots of folks still angry at Harper and will take it out on PP.

kiss of death it's a liberal majority gov that's a lock!

😂😂😂😂😂

Anthony__Koch Cheers.

Harper was a disastrous PM. PP is even worse! Harper had some smarts, PP doesn't!

The same Harper who went behind the Canadian government and tried to make deals with Trump.

Stephen Harper still has his nose out of joint because all his toxic vitriol didn't win him an election. He wants PP to be party leader because then he can control the government behind the scenes. PP is quite the a$$ kisser, and utterly unlikable.

Harper was a serial abuser of power. Count on the same from perpetually angry Pierre Poutine. NeverVoteConservative cdnpoli

Shocker...Harper controls the whole lot of these far right populists pretending to be conservative.

I love reading all the comments from you liberals on this tweet.

Yeah his one majority followed by apocalyptic defeat shows how sharp his judgement is!

The Liberals here trying to discredit PP are 😂 please tell us how you're life is better under Justin Trudeau. I remember the days of conservative leads hip because I was an adult under Harper these libs were in diapers. They have no idea what they are missing.

Pierre: he's just not ready.

He endorsed him as a message to Conservatives pretending to be moderates they can stop pretending, CPC_HQ's all in w/Christo-Fascist ops, aka Freedom Convoys, sabotaging Cdn efforts to mitigate spread of a deadly infectious virus/recover from its economic/social consequences.🙂

He was one of the brightest and best PMs Canada has had.

If Poilievre can stay away from the fringe noise makers and stick to sound financial issues he could be ok. As it stands he’s going after the more right wing elements which is troubling

Remember Nov. 4, 2015? That was the day we no longer had to give a crap about what the smartest man in the phone booth thought.

Poilievre may have the best chance to win the Conservative leadership but Charest the best chance to defeat the Liberal government

I have to disagree with Harper.

Who would have thought that garbage would endorse more garbage?

Canada could sure use Harper’s genuine leadership today instead of the divisive blackface circus clown they’ve had since 2015…

This is what happens when daddy has to find Ben a job

Ah, Harper: Illegitimate Prorogation of Parliament, Engaged in Abuse of Process with Omnibus Bills, Silenced Scientists, Billions Borrowed without Parliament’s Permission, Found in Contempt of Parliament, Robocalling, Horrible Economic and Environmental records, etc etc.

PierrePaulHus Charest seems very oblivious to a lot, but in his statement here especially! Conservatives did not “lose more seats” when Andrew Scheer ran… they gained more seats both from Liberals and NDP. They also won the majority of the popular vote in BOTH elections.

🤢🤢🤮

Please come back ! The country needs you ! stephenharper

Here we are, the fake conservatives will run a campaign on social media hashtags like freedom, woke-ness, and justinflation. The unspoken priority policies of Pierre's 'conservatives' will be cutting CPP, OAS and EI for average people to give tax breaks to rich people.

How about the IDU endorsed Pierre who also endorsed Trump and Boris. If you are worried about WEF you should be worried about the IDU.

If conservatives were actually conservative I might consider voting for a conservative. Cutting taxes for high income takers and capital gains takers always leads to higher debts and inflation. btw... does anyone remember Trudeau's 2016 tax cut for incomes $89,000 - $205,000?

Hey guys, remember when Harper signed that 31 year deal with China? In that deal if Chinese firms arent profitable, they can sue us in Chinese Courts to get what they think they're due. Now that Hauwei deal is dead, we're going to be stuck paying them anyway. Thanks to Harper.

LOL. Best chance to continue to be second place he means. Why is that party so blind to anything outside their bubble?

Dear Canadian Conservative media. I don't care what Stephen I wanna be a dictator says about his puppet Pierre. We know he is the puppet master.

Of course he does. Who amongst us doesn't look forward to a Reformer PM? /s

🤮🤮🤮

He looks concerned. I think this WEF has gotten out of control & no one expected things to get so insane PierrePoilievre

Thanks Steven Harper — a great prime Minister himself for backing Pierre Poilievre— a great prime Minister in the future!!!

Atta boy 🛑 Harper. I can’t wait for all the crying from the conservatives after they lose yet another election.

Yeah!, let’s go back to when the Reform was dominant in Alberta and Saskatchewan … (looks at last dozen elections). Ok strike that, there goes the moderate vote. Best chance at dragging the CPC cult off the extreme right edge…

Anthony__Koch The first man to lose a national election to Justin Trudeau endorses the 4th man who’ll lose an election to Justin Trudeau.

The kiss of death. Harper the puppet. When do you think the righties will find a good person to lead their party. USA had trump, now us.

MichaelPlaxton Ghouls gonna ghoul.

😂😅😂

Nope. Stephen Harper's opinion on who should govern this country is of no interest to anyone except Stephen Harper. He was relegated to the trash can of Cdn political history several years ago.

Harper is probably right but that doesn’t make Polieivre a good choice.

Hey Stephen, how about a shout out to your old pal MaximeBernier the one party leader who has consistently stood up for Canadians’ Charter rights and who didn’t stay quiet for 2 years waiting for the right political opportunity.

2 negatives don’t make a positive

When your best chance, is no chance.

There are no sound conservative ideas.

Good. pierrepoilievreforPM

Interesting. Justin Trudeau also endorses Pierre Poilievre, and does so wringing his hands. PP’s a sure-fire bet that the Liberals will win…again.

Best chance at winning and what is best for Canada are not always the same thing.

I was hoping LeslynLewis. If Poilievre wins, I'm done voting in all elections lol. City-Provincial and federal ..

Left foot right foot stumbling since 1867.

The LibCon UNiparty endorses itself...shocker.

Justin Trudeau be like.
