Photo, Marni Grossman/Paramount+Calgary native Bruce Horak had already established himself as a musician, painter and actor in Calgary’s theatre community when he landed the role of a lifetime. In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, he played no-nonsense Chief Engineer Hemmer of the Starship Enterprise.
Made up of a who’s-who of accomplished young jazz players from around the country, including Calgary jazz trumpeter Andre Wickenheiser, the 18-piece Canadian National Jazz Orchestra made its debut in April at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.
Nevertheless, she picked up this year’s top prize at Project WILD, a development program named after mainstream country station WILD 95.3. The win came with a $100,953 cheque to be used to further her career. Canmore actress Marika Sila earned her horror bonafides back in 2019 when she starred in an episode of Jordan Peele’s reimagining of The Twilight Zone, playing an Inuit police officer in Alaska opposite Greg Kinnear and Steven Yeun. But she landed her first feature-film starring role in 2022’s Ditched, a gory horror flick about the mayhem that ensues after a prison transfer of patients is ambushed on the road.
