Online backlash against Don Cherry for comments on immigrants and Remembrance Day

"Don's discriminatory comments are offensive and they do not represent our values and what we stand for as a network," Sportsnet President Bart Yabsley said in a statement Sunday.

"We have spoken with Don about the severity of this issue and we sincerely apologize for these divisive remarks." Cherry seemingly singled out new immigrants in Toronto and Mississauga, Ont., where he lives, for not honouring Canada's veterans and dead soldiers. "You people ... you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that," Cherry said.Cherry did not immediately respond to a request for comment."We're proud of diverse cultural heritage and we'll always stand up for it," she said on Twitter. "New immigrants enrich our country for the better. We're all Canadians and wear our poppies proudly.

This is dumb!!!!!!!!! There is way more important issues to be disputing about then this shit

His comments were not racist +were not vulgar. He is right, people need to truly become Canadian in custom as well as nationality. Flee oppression, come here but don’t take away our rights,we don’t want to become your country we have free speech, his comments were hurtful, too bad

Get rid of the guy

What a loser. I’ve lost all respect for this so called Canadian.

Don cannot say one thing but media allows blackface Trudeau do what ever he wants he is the perfect example of divisive

I stand with Don!

how insightful that the majority of people you interviewed for how they felt about the issue in your segment this morning were white non-immigrant males. partoftheproblem DonCherry

Don is in no position to assess how “Canadian” I am based on the act of wearing a poppy. His comment was crass and had some racist undertones. He needs to go.

He was talking about when those other hockey teams come to visit Canada in November...

Grapes is right on the money. There wouldn't be a 'Canada' had it not been for our veterans, especially those who served in the World Wars... Show your gratitude for Canada, and BE Canadian, or, go back to whatever shit show you ran from...

His face reminds of me 'shit happens' He's a coward for saying such racist comment, immigrants built this country from bottom to top, including my family. He should be turned into an online racist meme and let the world knows he loves privilege!

When did he say immigrants

That is the only singular thing that I agree on with Don Cherry.

Or online support should be the headline...

F CP24 F CBC F Don MacLean ❤️Don Cherry (I adore him and agree with what he said)

Don is right. If anyone should be wearing a poppy it's immigrants who come here for a better life. They wouldn't come if it wasn't the greatest country in the world. All because of our service men and women who died and fought for it. Lest we forget

What about Trudeau taking veterans to court and using our money to fight them for asking for more money to live? Nothing? Okay.

His observation is 100% accurate, that I noticed myself too.I wear my poppy beginning Nov.1 and when I run errands after work I noticed 0 Indian and Asian Canadians wearing them. For those who say they fall off, please buy a pin to reuse each year-0 excuses

I agree with Don 💯%

He said nothing, show respect for the fallen

Not saying I agree or disagree but when did freedom of speech go out the window? Are we to believe in the same things? See things the same way? I think that people should be entitled to their opinion..is there only one point of view..real Toronto FreedomOfSpeech

Unless the media called it discriminatory, in my view it's NOT. I am an immigrant. I've seen and heard immigrants say we don't give a shiat... I lived in Canada for 40 years & taught ESL and heard those who despise Western Culture & say we hate Veterans day which are Muslims. 🧐

Why do you say “online backlash” when there is also demonstrably online support as well? Mixed opinions. You can’t be trusted.

Immigrants aren't the only ones who dont wear poppies..I see tons of folks not wearing them. Each year the number of ppl wearing them dwindles..WHITE ppl included. They used to have them at schools..my kids said their school doesnt have any. So Don needs to check himself.

Well, here is some online support. Keep speaking the truth Don!

Cherrys right
