Appeal court decides 10\u002Dyear sentence was too high

The case of Helder Michael Sousa, 40, has been winding through the court system for years. From our newsroom to your inbox at noon, the latest headlines, stories, opinion and photos from the Toronto Sun.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. During the trial, the court heard the 911 call made by the sobbing woman, who had no idea where she was. His first trial was in April 2019 but it came to a halt within days when a new witness came forward after reading coverage of the trial in The Brantford Expositor. At a second trial, later in 2019, Sousa was found guilty by a jury after just an hour and, in January 2020, sentenced to 10 years in prison by Justice James Ramsey

Sousa, who’s been a permanent resident of Canada since he arrived from Portugal at age five, said he was in imminent danger of being deported, making his sentence “more significant than it would be for a Canadian.” But the Court of Appeal said it’s not certain the existing deportation order will ever be executed.

Violent sexual predator in Ontario has his prison sentenced reducedAppeal court decides maximum 10\u002Dyear sentence was too high for the rapist and reduced it by two years Not surprising in this third world country ! I thought the superior courts were only supposed to consider procedural errors, but some appeals judge is out there guaranteeing that all violent rapists file an appeal, even if to shave 20% of your sentence off for no reason I’ll personally pay the rent to have this guy move in next door to that appeals judge.
