In an interview, Medline, chief executive of Empire Co. Ltd., the Stellarton, N.S.-based company that oversees 1,600 stores under the Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, IGA, Foodland and Farm Boy banners, doubled down on his defence of the Canadian grocery business against a growing backlash over the cost of food, and suspicions that corporate greed is contributing to higher grocery bills.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
“If that’s the motion that goes through, it’s disappointing because it already has reached a conclusion without any work being done or any inquiry being held,” Medline said. “If people want to have inquiries that really can help Canadians, I’m all for it. I think a little good work beforehand, some reports and some facts, might be helpful instead of just, you know, trying to score some points by getting some grocery companies or retailers in front of Parliament.
Still, Medline said he would participate in any investigation — even though his previous appearance at a parliamentary inquiry, in the summer of 2020, devolved into a sparring match with members of Parliament over the top grocers’ simultaneous cancellation of their so-called Hero Pay bonuses.Article content
“I don’t think it’s any secret that I found the last parliamentary inquiry disappointing,” Medline said. “Some of it, if you read the transcript — which I’m not going to read again — it was a PR exercise.”in recent weeks as a rare food CEO willing to publicly challenge economists and consumer advocates who have asked why the three dominant grocery chains in Canada — Loblaw Cos. Ltd. and Metro Inc.
“From business leaders and from friends, I’ve never had a better reception to anything I’ve ever said,” Medline said of the speech. “I felt that something had to be said, and I said it. It got more attention than maybe I thought, which I’m glad of.”that Medline’s $8.65-million total compensation in 2022 represented a 15 per cent raise over 2021. “Did workers at his stores get a 15 per cent raise? No.
The woke left seems to think it should be the Sobeys Charity of Canada.
Eat the rich.
“Industry’s PR struggle” Very hard to shed a tear for Sobey’s. They made a deal with the devil. They created their own “PR struggle”.
I’d like to see a parliamentary inquiry on Trudeau’s profits on the lipid nano particle. Singh in his Lamborghini and wearing his Rolex just keeps beating the same horse ad nauseum. Does he ever ask his boyfriend about JUSTINflation ? Never see him tweet about that.
Don’t worry, we know who the true culprits are!!! 🖕ndp/libs
He is correct! Grocery is one of the toughest industries to operate in and make a profit!
So… did he get a big bonus this year? Did profits soar compared to the last three years? If they did, they are guilty of greed inflation.
Commies think everything should be free.
This asshole makes 8.6 million a year and got a 15% pay hike. He’s a fraud and a liar and these corporations are predatory. I don’t believe him for a second (and I am no fan of Jagmeet BTW)
He is absolutely correct. Targeting the grocery industry is political, nothing more. Grocery doesn't make the top ten most profitable industries in Canada. Dentistry is in the top ten. Why are they being subsidized with an NDP dental plan? Journalist should look into this.
And yet there is no inquiry into CPP board and heads
the ND P don't how things work because there incompetence know no barriers of time or place
one doth protest too much!!!!
Dog and Pony Show.
Go after theJagmeetSingh and see ALL his profits and assets, bet you will find it interesting JagmeetSinghMustGo NDPAreLiberals TrudeauMustGo LiberalsMustGo
If I profit 100,000 in PY & it cost me 50,000 to do so but CY it cost me 90,000 to make 110,000, I made more (record profits!) but my margins shrunk. This makes it much harder to get financing for expansions. Margins arent mentioned because they are harder to freak about
If Sobeys has nothing to hide, no need to fear an inquiry.
it's basic economic. if the CEO of Sobeys doesn't understand this, then maybe he should step down. During inflation, prices of goods increase, but due to the high price, demand should decrease, also decreasing profits cause are selling less. they all had record profits. gouging
Energy prices are the major factor of food prices. The oil companies are making record profits. The government should be taxing this additional windfall and at the same time cutting the taxes consumers pay at the pumps.
