MAURICE WAXES NOSTALGIC IN TORONTO

Brendan Shanahan, left, President of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas speak to the media after being eliminated in the first round of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs during a press conference in Toronto on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.The pieces are somehow connected — rightly or wrongly, emotionally or prudently — in what has to be an active off-season for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The complications are many if you’re trying to fix the Leafs. You have to sign Matthews long-term. He’s too great not to sign. You have to sign Nylander long-term. He’s too great not go sign. You have to keep Marner.

Alex Pietrangelo is a really smart hockey player who did a really dumb thing on the ice and the NHL enabled him to get away with it. His wild slash on Draisaitl should have been a three-game suspension, minimum. Which probably would have ended his season. Instead, the NHL does the nicely-nicely thing of suspending Pietrangelo and Darnell Nurse for the same number of games for unrelated hockey crimes that aren’t in any way similar … Poor Timo Meier.

What a time for Canadian basketball. Jamal Murray is alive and well with the Denver Nuggets. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was voted first-team all-star and Top 5 for MVP. Dillon Brooks made the second-team all-defensive team squad. R.J. Barrett averaged 20 points playing against Miami in Round 2 for the Knicks. Andrew Wiggins had a sharp playoffs with Golden State before getting hurt. Bennedict Mathurin of Indiana placed fifth in the rookie of the year voting.
