Dan Stanton, director of national security at the University of Ottawa’s Professional Development Institute and a former CSIS intelligence officer of 32 years, cautioned against taking the Indian government’s statements at face value. “Nijjar was told there was a hit out on him,” Singh told the Star, citing information from multiple sources close to Nijjar who he said were too afraid for their safety to speak to media.
Some in the crowd chanted in Punjabi, “Long live Khalistan,” “We want a separate Khalistan,” and “Death to India,” as RCMP officers looked on. He said CSIS and police were aware of the threat to Nijjar as well as other Sikh activists in Canada and failed to protect them.
