The latest on stabbing attacks in Saskatchewan that left 10 dead, 18 injured — among the worst mass killings in Canadian history. Suspected culprit, Damien Sanderson, was found dead on Monday. His brother and co-accused Myles continues to elude police.

RCMP and crime scene investigators are on scene in Weldon and a stabbing death that occurred on the morning of Sept. 4. RCMP are now searching for only one suspect in connection with the deaths of 11 people and the injury of at least 18 more. - Matt SmithWELDON, JAMES SMITH CREE NATION, MELFORT — Darryl Burns says his sister died as she lived: trying to help others in her home of James Smith Cree Nation.

“She died helping people. And we have to pick up that torch and carry it,” Darryl Burns said Monday on an edge of road near the nation’s reserve, which has an on-reserve population of about 1,600 people and is about 40 kilometres northwest of Melfort. Darryl and his brother Ivor blamed drugs and alcohol, saying the accused killers were drawn into a cycle of trauma and dysfunction.

James Smith Cree Nation has declared a state of emergency and asked for privacy. “It’s just an unimaginable tragedy,” said one man in Weldon. He declined to give his name, saying he already spoken to many reporters that day. Another man in Weldon responded to a question with an expletive.
