Personalized music on city streets has been around for a good while. The Sony Walkman first went on sale, for $150 US, in 1979. The Walkman became immensely popular — and widely imitated — in the 1980s. And portable music evolved from tape to CD to mini-disc to MP3 and, now, streaming music.Article contentI still enjoy a downtown stroll — though not on as many city blocks as was the case when I was younger and healthier. What’s constant, however, is my Grumpy Old Man aversion to headphones or ear buds.

I’ll crank up the Time Machine again for a bit of background. Like many young kids in the late 1950s, I loved music on the radio.His first No. 1 hit, Heartbreak Hotel, which was released in January, 1956. I was seven — too young for rock ’n’ roll.
