In his play After the Fall, the great U.S. playwright Arthur Miller presents a thinly veiled critique of his famous former wife, Marilyn Monroe. The title of this play came to my mind since I, too, can now write my own “after the fall” story.It was early in the morning and I, wearing my nightgown, was rounding the corner to another room to place my glasses on a small table, as is my habit, when it happened.
He took one startled look at the red apparition in front of him, took me back to my apartment, ordered me to sit down, brought a large sponge to try to stop the bleeding and called 911. He also amazingly found my “emergency bag” — which I always keep at the ready in case I have to stay in the hospital — and clothes to wear in case I was able come home.
Once we arrived at the hospital, I was transferred into a room and the staff went to work on me. Nurse, pharmacist, student doctor arrived in turn, questioning, making sure my mind was functioning, poking me with needles, checking my heart and blood pressure. Next, I was rolled along the corridor and into another room for a CT scan on my head. Finally, the “boss” doctor came, treated and bandaged the cut on my forehead and checked if I was able to walk. Yes, I could walk.
