The incident follows a coyote attack where a nine-year-old child was attacked on June 24, in the Popko Crescent and Knowles Avenue area also in North Kildonan. Winnipeg Police said the boy was walking with a 15-year-old girl when they noticed a coyote which began running towards them as they fled. The boy was mauled, at which time an area resident chased the coyote away. As a result, the boy sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital in stable condition.
“While these attacks are rare, it important that people be vigilant, supervise children closely, feed pets indoors, keep animals on a leash and reduce attractants,” Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development officials said in a release. “If a coyote is seen, people are encouraged to make noise, do what they can to appear large, stay in a group, and not run as that might incite a chase.”
Examples of attractants include pet food left outdoors, pet waste, garbage not secured in a building or wildlife resistant container, and compost food items that are accessible to wildlife.www.manitoba.ca/nrnd/fish-wildlife for information on coexisting with coyotesAnyone with information on this latest incident is asked to call the Turn in Poachers line at 1-800-782-0076.
