So much has happened in the 38 months since Scheer was first elected as Conservative leader that it’s hard to keep track.
He also deserves credit for resisting pressure on his right flank from Bernier and even from within his own ranks to reverse the party’s support for robust immigration. Scheer’s pre-election speech on the conservative case for minority rights, pluralism and immigration was one of the brightest moments of his leadership.
There’s probably some truth to this. Scheer’s responses to questions about hot-button issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage were awkward and uncomfortable. His unwillingness to be direct and vulnerable attracted greater scrutiny and bred suspicion among uncommitted voters.
He did a fantastic job of losing the election, much appreciated. Thank you Andrew.
