It was the kind of run that has been a hallmark of the Warriors dynasty, keyed by precision defence at one end of the floor and lightning-strike scoring at the other

On a night when the Toronto Raptors demonstrated again that they were not afraid of the big stage, not afraid of the team that has won three championships in four seasons, the Warriors reminded everyone just how scary they can be, erasing a double-digit lead in what seemed like the time it takes to chant “We the North.”

Toronto coach Nick Nurse said the bad stretch was similar to occasional rough patches in this playoff run: the offence can’t convert shots, which leads to quick scoring chances going the other way for the opponent. “We had four or five decent possessions there and we just came away empty on all of them, and then we had four or five that were not good possessions, either,” Nurse said. “So certainly the offence hurt the chances for the defence to get set up there.

The surge from the champs prevented the Raptors from cruising to another easy win and a 2-0 series lead in their first Finals. Given that the Warriors are heavy favourites to win their third straight NBA title, that scenario would have been close to unimaginable before the series began. With its win in Game 1, Toronto had beaten Golden State three straight times this season; no team has ever beaten the Warriors in four consecutive games since Steve Kerr became the head coach in 2014.

“We have been up 3-1 and lost a series. We have been down 3-1 and won a series,” he said. “So nothing is going to catch these guys off guard, and they are very accustomed to the rhythm and tone of a seven-game series and how long it takes, how many twists and turns there are. And you know that as soon as you lose a game, it will be on the crawl that now we only have a 19.7 per cent chance of winning the series. Then if we win tomorrow we’ll have a 42.7 chance of not losing the series.

This is why Kerr was all but rolling his eyes at the percentages he was mockingly quoting the other day. Historical trends don’t mean boo. The odds said the Raptors should have been dead several times over, and yet here they are, the zombie team from the north that keeps sticking its hand out of the dirt.
