The International Olympic Committee would normally, at this point, have every reason to be letting out a deep exhale

The close of Beijing 2022 brings to an end six years and four Games that were out of their comfort zone for a variety of reasons. The Olympics of Rio 2016, the first in South America, were plagued by cost overruns, funding shortages, construction delays and safety concerns. Four years ago in Korea, those problems were solved but the time zone was far from ideal for the two continents, Europe and North America, that provide most of the IOC’s revenue in the form of broadcast money.

From here, it’s comparatively clear sailing: Paris 2024, the Italian region of Milan-Cortina for 2026, and Los Angeles in 2028.

These were a grim Games. There were, of course, the usual array of fabulous performances and wonderful stories.
