It’s a shot that displays some of the reasons why Davies is rapidly becoming a global star

In the compressed soccer calendar that was created after the pause due to the pandemic, the short-term future for Davies is clear: Bayern Munich will have just a few weeks of down time before the off-season, such as it is, is over, and they will be back to begin defending their treble of trophies: the Champions League, German Cup, and the Bundesliga title, which they have won in eight straight seasons. Davies is bound to be a central figure in all that.

But over the longer term, his ceiling right now looks limitless. On Monday Davies was added to the cover art of PES2021, a soccer video game in which he now appears next to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who are the two most famous soccer players in the world, and two of the best to ever play the sport. And in addition to the prime ministerial praise, Davies won plaudits from fellow professionals, celebrities and even the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Davies signed a contract extension with Bayern in April that runs through 2025, but it’s far from certain that he will see it out. The biggest clubs in soccer always poach talent from those just below them, and while Bayern is a huge club in its own right, it’s a notch below Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, while England’s Premier League offers a larger global stage than the Bundesliga.
