Ukrainian refugee Yana Shkliaruk, her mother and baby are now safe in Canada. The peace and quiet of Kingston’s Cataraqui River is soothing relief from the cacophony of war machines and flight engines they’ve endured recently.

At just 20, Ukrainian refugee Yana Shkliaruk has already experienced a lifetime of events — love, marriage, career, motherhood, war and widowhood.

When the war broke out in Ukraine, Yana’s little family was torn apart. Russian forces invaded their town of Irpin, their home was bombed, and the family moved to the basement of a local church. Yana and her baby, as well as her mother and grandmother, fled to the countryside while her husband stayed to assist others seeking safety.

Yana works for ARX Insurance, a Fairfax Financial-owned company in Ukraine. As soon as the war began, the Toronto-based holding company engaged the expertise of special-ops veterans through the disaster response organization Tactivate. They, along with the three local Ukrainian Fairfax company CEOs, set a massive plan in motion to mobilize and protect all 5,000 employees and family members based in Ukraine.

Finally, flights from Warsaw to Toronto via Barcelona were secured through the volunteer-run charitable organization Veterans Rebuilding Life and their Safe Passage for Ukraine program.

Thank God a few families can come! What's the hold-up for more?
