Ryan Reynolds, Christopher Bratty and the Remington Group wanted to go on the power play in an attempt to purchase the Ottawa Senators.

If it felt like the air came out of the balloon in this sale when Reynolds and Bratty decided to “exit stage right” Thursday, it sure seemed like it. But sources say the people at GSP couldn’t change the process with six other parties involved in Phase 2.

The Remington Group wanted a 30-day window to negotiate with the NCC, but what they were going to try to accomplish in that time frame would have been tough. Tobi Nussbaum, the chief executive officer of the NCC, noted last month there is room for flexibility, but we’re told Bratty was looking for a much larger slice that could have ranged anywhere from 20-to-40 acres.Article content

But we know GSP was never going to grant Remington the exclusivity window it wanted, and the bank couldn’t. You can say what you want about the way the bank has run this, and there is no shortage of complaints amongst the bidders but granting that window would have set off a mutiny. He wanted Reynolds involved at the end and had advised him to wait to see where this went. All this has left him on the outside looking in.
