Ryan Reynolds and the Remington Group won't bid on Ottawa Senators

It’s a surprising turn of events, but not totally unexpected because there have been several twists in this story since the club was put up for sale in November.

As this newspaper reported 12 days ago, sources said the Remington Group was committed to a new arena downtown at LeBreton Flats or elsewhere with an entertainment district, plus they’d redevelop the land where the Canadian Tire Centre sits and bring in local partners if the deal was completed. Indications were that Bratty and Reynolds, who also met with Sutcliffe, were prepared to finance the closing of the deal to purchase the Senators themselves with GSP, the Melnyk family and the NHL.

Postmedia has confirmed seven groups met with Senators chief financial officer Erin Crowe, president of business operations Anthony LeBlanc and general manager Pierre Dorion.• Michael Andlauer, the owner of the Ontario Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs and a minority owner of the Montreal Canadiens.
