Canada's foreign affairs minister says the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine remains high as cyberattacks undermined earlier optimism Tuesday that the Kremlin might be drawing down its military forces.

"The latest information I have is that the threat is real and imminent," Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly told The Canadian Press Tuesday. "Everybody's taking this by the hour. Things have been moving; the situation is extremely volatile."

"We'll use every single way to launch diplomatic conversations. But meanwhile, Russia needs to show their intent by de-escalating. That's really, really important," Joly said. Joly said she was extremely concerned by the cyberattacks and had spoken to her Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, for more details.

Russia wants guarantees that Ukraine will not be allowed to join NATO, and that the 30-country transatlantic alliance will stop seeking to recruit new member countries from eastern Europe in what the Kremlin views as the former Soviet Union's old sphere of influence.

Ukraine hints at concessions to Russia as German leader heads to region | CBC NewsUkraine's ambassador to Britain on Monday backtracked on remarks suggesting that Kyiv would reconsider its attempt to join NATO, as Russia masses a force within striking distance of its neighbour, but said other concessions could be on offer. Best for Canada and NATO stay down as Ukraine people don’t want war and Russia just pulled another chess play on West and forced us and USA to spend multi millions beefing up Ukraine defences ! Biden needs a war to prop up his weak performance and was going to prop up Trudeau! Why expand nato? The end of the cold war should have disbanded nato not continue adding to its ranks which it has and continues to entertain. Threatening to expand nato again is another act of aggression towards Russia. I don't think Russia will invade Ukraine. 1 Any concessions will not satisfy Russia. 2 These “concessions” will never be accepted by people of Ukraine (no matter what MFA or, even a president says). Ukraine is a country with a mature democracy. We have an experience of expelling the rulers who try to give our country up.
