Ukrainian leaders accused Russia of seizing 15 rescue workers and drivers from a humanitarian convoy trying to get desperately needed food and other supplies into the bloodied port city of Mariupol, which also came under naval attack after weeks of air and land strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky estimated that 100,000 civilians remained in Mariupol, scene of some of the war's worst devastation, as Russia presses a nearly month-old offensive by bombarding cities and towns. Those made it out described a shattered city.

The Red Cross confirmed a humanitarian aid convoy trying to reach the city had not been able to enter. “There’s no connection with the world. We couldn’t ask for help," said Julia Krytska, who was helped by volunteers to make it out with her husband and son. "People don’t even have water there.” Putin’s aims remain to “get rid of the military potential of Ukraine” and to “ensure that Ukraine changes from an anti-Russian centre to a neutral country,” Peskov said.

A Western official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss military assessments, said Ukrainian resistance has brought much of Russia's advance to a halt but has not sent Moscow's forces into retreat. The invasion has driven more than 10 million people from their homes, almost a quarter of Ukraine's population, according to the United Nations.

What to know about hypersonic missiles fired by Russia at UkraineRussia has used hypersonic missiles in its invasion of Ukraine, U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed Monday. But British intelligence and even Biden's own defence secretary have downplayed Russia's use of its air-launched Kinzhal missiles. What everyone needs to know is that this war is simply about using up weaponry. There is no money to be made in the otherwise highly lucrative war machine business if the weapons are not being used up. Death is just a sideshow to the leaders of nations - especially Putin types.
