ICYMI - Rex Murphy: Toronto’s public libraries hold the line on free speech

Coming as it did the day after the election, the dismissal of the pestiferous complaint against 13 or more female cosmeticians, brought to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal by the self-declared trans woman Jesse/Jessica Yaniv , hardly got the attention it deserved.

Now people living in less enlightened cities than Toronto might think that a civilized, qualified woman — feminist, too — speaking on the subject of women, in the quiet dignity of a public library, to people who wished to hear her, was the very definition of adult public discourse, an illustration of a healthy civic climate, and a very fine addition to the intellectual state of democracy.

The chief librarian of the city, Vickery Bowles, came in for a rare roasting. A guy on the radio actually asked “given her defence of Megan Murphy speaking in a branch” could she “continue as chief librarian?” From what well of utter intellectual confusion that question came from I am unwilling to give the time to research. Mayor John Tory — always Horatio at the wrong bridge — publicly confessed he was “disappointed” that Ms. Bowles didn’t cancel the event.

Surely Meghan Murphy has a little more ground than self-identified Jessica Yaniv to assert the less troublous category of “feminist.” Feminist is — hold on — not even a biological state. Feminism doesn’t ask other people to wax its particles. It is an intellectual orientation.

The whole of placing a definition on what constitutes hate speech is a treacherous path to tread at the very best

Just don’t leave freedom of speech up to some local self interested municipal politicians with no discernible backbones. Takes the library administer Vickery Bowles to defend freedom. JohnTory and Toronto council should be ashamed.

That allowing free speech in a public library should be worth noting in a national newspaper should send a chill down the spine of every single Canadian citizen. So-called 'Progressives' are disgracing the history of what it meant to be liberal.

Toronto. The hypocrisy capital of Canada. Voted for Trudeau and John Tory.

must be a Blue Moon, Rex and I agree on something

holy shit you are still talking about this
