As, background, Newfoundland bore a large price for the depression in Alberta’s oilfields. Thousands of Newfoundlanders found their best-ever, highest-paid work in Fort McMurray, Alta., and Newfoundland benefited mightily from that province’s welcoming of East Coast workers. The oil boom brought many benefits to many Canadians, but especially Newfoundlanders, after the fishery collapse of the early 1990s.
But Newfoundland is Newfoundland. I recall one sunny morning in Ferryland — a gleaming jewel among the many jewels of Newfoundland’s coastal communities. I spent a good half hour looking out over its harbour. All was tranquil. No fog, gulls squawking in harmony — it was a morning of peace and loveliness.
And to be sure, the prosperous times moved swiftly past. Oil prices fell. Alberta sent its workers home. Newfoundland’s already small population dwindled, and its beloved outports thinned to vanishing point. The whole offshore oil industry, which has been Newfoundland’s lifeline, is simultaneously in peril. Trudeau is the death knell of Canada! Canada’s once great and optimistic future won’t survive Trudeau. Canada is slowly spiralling into a country that is corrupt and bankrupt with a decaying infrastructure and unsupported over regulated industries that is driving out investment.

Rex 'Dilbit' Murphy ☠
Thank Trudeau
It doesn’t matter... they will still vote Liberal, even though theyve killed the province’s economy
There’s more oil offshore of Newfoundland than in all of Saudi Arabia. Maybe Trump can make them a state and really save the world along with Newfoundland. Alberta and Newfoundland can become a separate country too. “Canadian Free States.”
With both Liberal AND Conservatives committed to reaching Paris Climate Accord goals, Newfoundlander's should forget about any resource developments for a generation or so. Either way, I suspect they'll continue voting for these same destructive policies.
