Early this week Captain Kenney and at least eight other explorers travelled from the Alberta Belt to spend all of Monday and Tuesday in hoped-for meetings with the space-time continuum lifeforms that cosmologists and political science interns refer to as the Ottawa Confabulation. They populate a region housing a concentration of civil servants and politicians that forms the dark centre mass of the Obfuscation Galaxy.
In the past five years or so, what I prefer to call anti-Ottawa sentiment, as opposed to anti-Confederation sentiment, has gone from simmer to full boil, from spark to blaze, a condition that requires no polls or surveys to validate. Just drop into Alberta for a few days. Or if you do wish proof, consider the total wipeout of the Liberal party in Alberta and Saskatchewan in the recent election. Disenchantment has no heartier expression than complete expulsion.
There is now, though not at crisis stage, yet, a genuine questioning, of varying intensity, by a majority of Albertans, and an undetermined portion in neighbouring Saskatchewan, about their place in Confederation, and by obvious extension a questioning of Confederation itself. This is a sentiment that in our normally quiescent Canada should not be left unattended, for we are not bound together with “hoops of steel” as we perhaps much too casually like to think.
So I view this double jaunt to the high capital of Ottawa certainly as a means to promote Alberta’s prosperity; to remind the Liberal government that its ill-advised and pointless mission to be a global saviour on climate change is having deep ramifications here at home. You cannot play the hero in Paris or Madrid and expect applause in Calgary or Red Deer.
Well put Rex. The Prime Minister needs to pick up the ball and deal with these obvious problems. He has the opportunity to be a leader, get prairie economies back on track and recoup tax revenue for all the programs he thinks are important. Win/win. Will he take the initiative?
