Republican Kevin McCarthy gained support from 14 holdouts but still lost his 12th bid for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Posted: Jan 06, 2023 9:04 AM ET | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

The 12th vote took in a standoff that is testing American democracy anew. It took place against the backdrop of the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, which shook the country when a mob of then-President Donald Trump's supporters tried to stop Congress from certifying the Republican's 2020 election defeat to Democrat Joe Biden.

Voting resumed after Republican Rep. Mike Garcia nominated McCarthy for a 12th time, also thanking the U.S. Capitol Police who were given a standing ovation for protecting lawmakers and the legislative seat of democracy on Jan. 6, 2021. There were glimmers of a deal with at least some of the holdouts who have denied him support. Negotiators are in "a good position" and progress is being made, he said in the phone call.

A staff member from the clerk's office of the U.S. House of Representatives counts votes with a manual counter as they mark vote tally sheets during the 10th round of voting for the new Speaker of the House on Thursday. After a long week of failed votes, Thursday's tally was dismal: McCarthy lost seventh, eighth and then historic ninth, 10th and 11th rounds of voting, surpassing the number from 100 years ago in the last drawn-out fight to choose a speaker.

He is Speaker now but Typ.CBC only wanted to report on failed attempts, CALLED DEMOCRACY they loved attacking Repub. for their anti repub. biased agenda. McCarthy is in now Can you imag. that squeaky annoying voice of Freeland saying Mr Speaker in that horrible voice of hers.

Congress actually did their job on behalf of the public and negotiated at least 72 hours to read the laws they pass AND single issue bills where you cannot bury pork spending attached to it AND oversight of law enforcement? Transparency? I can see why CBC libs are upset!

The World is Laughing .... INCOMPETENT BOOBS

CONTENT DEACTIVATED – WHY? The first step should be to replace him with a Conservative. Defund the Left wing CBC NOW. We should not stand for this blind partisanship

🤮

Another great example as to why you NeverVoteConservative

It took 15 ballots and various concessions for Kevin McCarthy to win over holdouts from his own ranks and clinch enough votes early Saturday.

Flipped but still lost? Who fucking cares about American politics. I pay your wage and you report that? You wonder why Canadians don’t watch CBC? This is why. Of I want American news I will tune I will tune in there. I want Canadian news where do I look? That’s the problem.

Okay okay we get the point CBC you don’t like him. Get over it. I swear this is all you care about today. Is this like the 20th article today?

we can get USA news from the US. defund cbc

Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy flipped 15 conservative holdouts to become supporters, including the chair of the chamber's Freedom Caucus, leaving him just a few shy of seizing the gavel.

Give Up.

Holy shit man!!! Take a freaking hint!

What a gong show this CBC article is! The election of a House Speaker is by majoritarian rule, democracy at work. Yet the article uses faux alarmism of a “gruelling battle” over who should become Speaker, a “standoff that is testing American democracy”.

“Republican Kevin McCarthy gained support from 14 holdouts” If only he hadn’t already sold his soul…

It is strange (and a little terrifying) that the AB Separatists think joining this mess is a better choice for Alberta.

Democracy at work - something we don't see with our federal government.

I stopped reading the article when opponents were described as ‘far right’. Can anyone at CBC write an article without using those words to describe anyone they don’t agree with. The term has lost all meaning because of you hacks.

BooFuckingHoo 🤣🤣🤣🤣

He will win in 13th ballot
