Record number of Canadians reporting first language other than English or French: StatsCan

English and French remain the dominant languages in Canada according to Statistics Canada, but the number of people who speak a non-dominant language at home grew to 4.6 million, or roughly 13 per cent of the population.

Meanwhile, at least one in four Canadians reported having at least one first language other than English or French. The increase is largely due to a rise in the number of Canadians who report speaking predominantly South Asian languages, including Hindi and Punjabi. In addition, seven in ten Canadians whose first language is one other than English or French said they also speak an official language at home.

Multiculturalism baby.

Since all new Canadians must pass an official language proficiency test before becoming a citizen, does it really matter what other language they speak?

All of this means we will have a more intelligent population. People who speak more than one language, have higher intelligence. Bring it on!

To be expected.

Makes sense. It’s as the globalists intend.

Well yeah. Bring in people from other countries, that speak different languages..that means higher amounts of different languages here. Simple math and common sense

And yet English Canada won’t pass racist language laws, only Quebec

This is not surprising as Canada has a large immigration quota the current gvt strives to meet. Obviously not all immigrants are going to have English or French as a first language.

I thought we were a bilingual country, not a Whatever-Language country.

I’m getting flashes of the replacement theory…

Makes sense... Canadians have less than 2 children per couple, so population growth comes from immigration, and over time we become more ethnically diverse

To many people, Canada is just a territory on which to continue what they had back home - just like settlers from Europe a few centuries ago

Quebec is a tiny minority of this country. Being forced into bilingualism doesn't make it so.

This article would have been helped enormously with some graphs.

They all should be learning English.

Canadians speak English, quebecers speak French, the rest aren’t Canadian

Amazing city of culture and a redefined uniqueness

Someone really needs to invent a Star Trek style Universal Translator. Think of all the communication issues we could solve with one

There has been more Spanish speakers in Canada than French speakers for at least two decades now that goes for mandarin and Hindi speakers as well.

Shocking. Record numbers of quota based mass immigration under the Trudeau liberals just might be the reason.

That is why bilingualism is an outdated irrelevant tool in Canada that cost us billions of dollars in duplication of services for a minority population

With the increase of foreign languages taking hold all over Canada will Canada stand to lose French as a second language?

RIP CANADA NOW A WOKE LAND OF LOSERS.

“The great replacement is a conspiracy theory. “Whites aren’t being replaced, bigot.”

All of India is here in Canada now. Too many “students” coming from Indian Punjab. Not good for Indian Punjab either. Brain drain.

Caused by half a million new Canadians each year according to experts.

English is the world language.

No problem with all languages spoken in Canada BUT lets makes sure that everyone speaks English or French or an Indigenous Language! We must be able to communicate so we understand each other in a Doctor, Dentist, Lawyer, Immigration etc. office!

Diversity is our strength... unless you're trying to communicate with a store clerk or colleague with rudimentary English or French language skills. Unfortunately our government and its communication arm, the CBC, want us all to celebrate the Tower of Babel!

Bs !!!

Anyone shocked by this clearly lives in the woods or is a Liberal who thinks everyone is a racist

Any Tim’s or Wendy’s drive thru would confirm this 💯

“English and French remain the dominant languages in Canada” Well that isn’t true whatsoever. This report shows, again, that this an English speaking country and shouldn’t be considered bilingual. Mind-boggling that this country bends over backwards for 11.2% (French only).

That’s great if they all integrate and learn the language. It appears however, that Canada is becoming a nation of multiple enclaves

Normal when JT brings so many immigrants into the country.

when you import 10s of thousands of non-english speaking immigrants (for what reason exactly?) who don't share the culture, identify with the people already here, and don't speak the language, this is what happens

This is bc we allow immigrant leeches not to integrate. Canada is more divided than ever and this is exactly what the liberals want. Easier to rule!Canada is losing its identity which is part of the WEF pilot program

Diversity is our strenght! 🤡🏆

Bien trabaja, Canadá!

I missed the announcement of a strategy to deal with the strain on our Healthcare system caused by a record increase in immigrants. I'm sure it was an oversight what with covid and all and a totally incompetent Trudeau cabinet.

Bravo !

cbc has lost all journalistic integrity

This is the end. I am selling everything and going back to Brazil which is growing 2.5% a year. Canada is a trap.
