Recent violent incidents against Canadian politicians the result of increased polarization, experts say via ipoliticsca

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks with people as protesters shout at him in Belleville, Ontario, on Thursday July 20, 2023.

A recent spate of violent and harassing incidents against politicians in different parts of the country is raising questions about the role that elected officials themselves are playing in heightening polarization of political discourse in Canada. Late last week, police in Prince Edward Island charged a 62-year-old man with assault after an altercation at a public meeting in mid-July in which provincial cabinet minister Rob Lantz was shoved.

The meeting was a public information session about a proposed safe consumption site in the province’s capital city of Charlottetown. The site’s location has been a thorny issue, made even more contentious by a surprise announcement during the recent provincial election that the originally proposed site would change — a failed effort at flipping the seat from green to blue by the incumbent Progressive Conservatives.
