The RCMP's costly contract policing obligations across Canada are draining resources from the force's federal duties in areas such as organized crime and national security, an internal government memo warns.

The demand for contract officers in the provinces and territories where they provide regular local policing services outstrips the RCMP's capacity to recruit and train them, causing shortages that have led to officer health and wellness concerns, says the Public Safety Canada document.

The coming unionization of rank-and-file Mounties will only intensify these pressures, the memo says. This makes the RCMP the police of jurisdiction for over one-fifth of Canada's population in a geographic area accounting for three-quarters of the country. "Federal policing responsibilities have been and are being eroded to meet contract demands," the memo says.

The challenges come as the national police force tries to modernize, including unionization of frontline officers, following a series of revelations about internal bullying and harassment.

They she get the hell out of Provincial & Municipal policing to concentrate solely on Federal Policing period !

Federal government can't even carry out the basic things needed to keep us a sovereign country.

Note issues with recruitment

Weak willed fools we have for politicians, the RCMP should never be allowed to unionized. We have too many idiots for political leaders. Essential Government services, absolutely no unionization. This is not some fairy tale lotus world, it is broken and unbalanced.

Have always believed that each province should have their own police. RCMP should be involved in national level investigations, terrorist issues, counter intelligence, close protection & create a policing excellence program to assist the provinces.

They fucked up, is that what that's supposed to mean?

Stop defending the fucks who failed to prevent a massacre.

rcmpgrcpolice & media facing a Corruption issue based on nepotism w/ Gov't officials & aiding/abetting coverup of Gov't illegal activity SNC, foreign influence in elections, irresponsible management of taxpayers $$$, NDA FollowtheMoney all the way to the TrudeauFoundation

As mclaudebibeau told farmers. Make better use of the money.

Meanwhile all of our provincial and local police are wasting their time on traffic enforcement when there is no traffic.

Perhaps if you paid them a salary in line with their duties, you would not have problems attracting recruits. The RCMP, which carries more responsibilities than any other police force in the country, isn't even in the top 100 paid police forces in the country.

Abolish the RCMP and start over. They're corrupt in the highest levels and it heavily effects the street level officers. They would be better off on provincial police forces.

How about toss the sold out RCMP to the curve and then arrest all in the Canadian Government, then ship them all to GITMO. Make Canada Traitorless Again

No, it’s incompetence from their Commissioner TrudeauPuppet
