Fort McMurray — A former lifeguard at a Fort McMurray rec centre has been charged following a drowning that took place in late 2020.

On Dec. 12, 2020, police and paramedics were called to the pool at MacDonald Island Park when they received reports of a possible drowning. A 34-year-old Fort McMurray man was brought to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre and later transferred to a hospital in Edmonton. Police did not release the man’s name, but a GoFundMe fundraiser for his family identified the victim as Dima Serbulenco. A statement from Wood Buffalo RCMP said after consulting the Crown prosecutors’ office, police charged the lifeguard who was on duty at the time of the incident. RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Sabrina Clayton said she could not comment on the lifeguard’s actions when the drowning occurred, and said the issue will be discussed in court.

Ruslan Atantayev, 25, of Calgary has been charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death. He is scheduled to appear in Fort McMurray Provincial Court on Nov. 2.
