“I’d probably say, like, half of the games someone said something, but no one ever heard,” said Myles Douglas, a 16-year-old Black player from Georgetown, Ont.
Douglas says he hears racial slurs directed at him in half of the 45 games he has played this season. It is difficult to say how many players experience racism on the ice, but CTV News spoke with other GTHL players who also said they were targeted but declined to appear on camera. “We don’t publish stats about minors on an anonymized or aggregated basis, since that may damage the reputation of the vast majority of the young players in our league whose good sportsmanship is beyond question,” said the League’s executive director, Scott Oakman.
I played for 20 years, coached another 15. Never heard racial slurs. And if I had, I would have kicked someone’s ass!
Saskatchewan too.
Zero tolerance. Slap a few penalties on a few kids (and their parents), eject the worst offenders, and the problem will solve itself. Kids know they can't get away with that kind of stuff at school, and it's only the general societal attitude that lets it extend into hockey.
Listen most music from hip hop, rap those words are thrown out like they are the most common words ever spoken
Not cool....this has to stop.....
No more racial slurs but don't worry you can still slash your stick on a persons body and punch them in the face.
In a lot of sports!! As a high level soccer and hockey coach, heard and seen it far too often. I have seen refs eject players due to comments. Always thanked them!! I pulled my soccer team off the pitch once due to a black player calling my white player the N word !!!
Bahahaha, spoken to many blacks, no problem, break no laws, no problem!
Lol,unless you've played, you have no idea.....
The racism is real amongst the players and parents. I recall this very well growing up playing in the GTHL (A to AAA) as a minority. It never got addressed because others don’t believe you or they didn’t take it seriously. Looks like the league still won’t take it seriously...
I my young time when we played against Ontario teams occasionally they called me the frog...We drop the gloves and went for a little dance...After the game we went for a beer together..It was the good old days..Nowadays you can not even say 'you people' ..🤔
is suddenly being paid by LeadNow? (same $$$ behind domestic terrorist antifa collective) to post junk like this?
Mostly from North Toronto...
The place I live is so small white folks stop and stare when they see non-whites. Racial slurs are more than common. If the tourists only knew. 😔
Oh yes
I coached in the early 2000’s in the GTHL. I had a few racial slurs slung at me and several at one of our players. Apparently, Little has changed 20 years later!
Awwwww poor babies.
Racial slurs are common all around Toronto as I go for my daily walks I hear a lot .
CTV pushing the communist narrative real hard lately
Never heard a racial slur on the ice in 25 years of playing hockey.
Hockey is waste of money Aaa & Aa
Give it up. Can you make it anymore obvious you’re trying to stoke flames. Just fk off.
Sure it is ...more white bashing CTV ..
And this is a revelation?
This should have been dealt with long before now. Shouldn’t take a BLM march and public outcry to surface this issue.
Keep trying for your race war, if this doesn’t work see if youcan get sharks with laser beams
It is common among the racialized groups.
Sure there is.
Lies all lies.
who cares, hockey is irrelevant.
virus must be disappearing racist racist racist then back to global warming scam
So basically the league’s executive director, Scott Oakman want's to protect the racists. SMH
Media is truely shameful
