The trouble started almost immediately after she opened her vegan café in Val-David last spring, Sophia Banks says

A trans woman says she was forced to close her café in Val David last month after it was repeatedly vandalized and amid a barrage of online reviews deriding her gender identity and political views.

“Because the vandalism kept happening and the online stuff was just so non-stop, I didn’t feel safe anymore, I didn’t feel like my staff was safe anymore. I was losing money, I was going into work and having a panic attack every week. So we decided to close the business.” Banks says it’s possible this wave of publicity combined with her activism on social media began drawing the attention of “right-wing trolls.” In particular, many appeared to be outraged at her opposition to Bill 21, Quebec’s religious symbols ban.

Poulin offered to get the Sûreté du Québec involved, but Banks felt uncomfortable about speaking to the police.

The implication was they failed because of conservative trolls which may be true. But it could be they just made a business mistake. Not going to the police didn’t help.

That’s Quebec for you

Okay, so the vandalism and general a-hole actions are not cool, but perhaps closing the shop had more to do with “I was losing money,” vegan, and $25/hour pay rates. Antler Kitchen in TO did just fine despite a-holes protesting...

Quebec the tolerant province.

Double-edged sword for the café owner. She had to decide what is most important: her café or her outspoken stance. She brought her outspoken stance and all that noise to her workplace. Hard for me to be empathetic here.

Pulling a Jussie Smollett?

They probably did it to themselves cause their business was failing

Right.

Terrible journalism full of assumptions.

Fake and gay

What's that awful smell? Oh, I know.

In the not so old days they used to set fire to a failing business and get what they could from nsurance. It had a racist nickname. $$ lightning. Now.. It’s a referendum on society instead of looking at a lousy business plan and a crappy owner. Cuz it’s 2015.

I think it’s clear why they closed up shop. Now they have a gofundme page to cover their losses. 💸🤦‍♂️

Come to Ottawa!!! All we care about is how good the coffee is.
