Two Buffalo police officers were charged with assault Saturday, prosecutors said, after a video showed them shoving a 75-year-old protester in recent demonstrations over the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.

Robert McCabe and Aaron Torgalski, who surrendered Saturday morning, pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault. They were released without bail. The officers had been suspended without pay Friday after a TV crew captured the confrontation the night before near the end of protests.

The footage shows a man identified as Martin Gugino approaching a line of helmeted officers holding batons as they clear demonstrators from Niagara Square around the time of an 8 p.m. curfew. Two officers push Gugino backward, and he hits his head on the pavement. Blood spills as officers walk past. One officer leans down to check on the injured man before another officer urges the colleague to keep walking.

The video of the encounter sparked outrage online as demonstrators take to cities across the country to protest Floyd's death. "I think there was criminal liability from what I saw on the video," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a briefing Saturday. "I think what the mayor did and the district attorney did was right, and I applaud them for acting as quickly as they did."But dozens of Buffalo police officers who were angered over their fellow officers' suspensions stepped down from the department's crowd control unit Friday. The resigning officers did not leave their jobs altogether.

.policing needs rethought from law ENFORCEMENT to people GUARDIANSHIP, including first aid response, mental health & law roles into one not just show up and dominate , so we don’t wind up with aggressive only mentalities (thugs) enforcing law

Disgraceful.

I am 72 years old and know better than to approach a riot police line, why would anyone put themselves in that position? Please we must all respect police as 99.99% are fantastic at what they do. Lets all start showing RESPECT for all people and the world will be a little better.

The ones acuse the police will be happy if the police ignore they calls in case of a situation criminal, love it

😂😂😂😂 another episódio of comedy

The rest of those cops that didn't help should be charged too

Charged with assault for doing their job? No wonder the police are leaving their positions in droves.

How is a push different from an order to use rubber bullets on a peaceful PROTEST?

This was a setup, the old guy waits for his prey to come and they fall right into the scam of false abuse, nobody knows what he said to the cop, proceed with caution before you judge a book by its cover.

Just going to leave this here

Agree.....get the fuck out of the way old man.

What about Toronto 'Cops' I say that because it's like they are playing dress up to push the narrative that 'cops are bad' You're a complete joke CTV

Yes, George Soros Sent Money to Fund the Riots—and So Did Taxpayers.

This is terrible!

This was not necessary, and made me green hearing this gentleman’s head hit the sidewalk. He’s in his 70’s and wasn’t confrontational. Police need to chill.

Suspended bullshit thepushing cop needs to be fired . Th cop who gave a glancing look needs tobe suspended without pay for at least a month.

That's good. Anyone treating elders like that should be charged.

He waited for them, then approached them, nobody knows what the elderly man said for the action but it seems the incident is a setup for failure for the police. Never judge a book by its cover.

idiots they could see he was a senior shame

No they should have not been charged. I hope the charges are dropped. The whole squad quit in Defense of their fellow officers and I don’t blame them. If this keeps up every police office and white person will all be racist. alllivesmatter

It looks like they are just trying to keep him at arm's distance he should have kept social distancing. They Should not be a charged.

Good.

The public Reactions would have been different if they would have got down, offered the man first aid & comfort waiting for medical personnel. They Just walked over him like he was trash. That is whats so horrid to watch. Their absolute Indifference to an injured elderly person

Happy about that. Could there be an interference charge (or whatever they would call it) against the cop who prevented the other from checking on the victim?

Rioters in London are assaulting police horses.

More... Antifa attacks Black police officer. Black lives don’t matter to Antifa. They’re using the protests as cover to sow hate.

I hated it when the concerned cop was stopped from checking on the victim, by the other douchebag....

George Floyd's 33rd degree eagle freemason tattooo: 'Order from Chaos'. In other words bring martial law into effect due to riots.

Good

Oh my goodness!!! 😱🤬😱

This from the Liberal organized crime family who, over the course of nearly two years, hasn't shown you footage of Trudeau's friend Macron in France beating his citizens like dogs in the street on a weekly basis Twitter showed you this not CTV 👇

YourMorning Who knew our phones would be the best weapons of defence to finally bring human rights issues to the forefront?

The 75 year old was known instigator, which the media fail to tell you. Maybe his days of instigating are over as can be seen the man got his long legs crossed as he was pushed back.

The Canadians:

This cop should be held accountable for harming an elderly man. Only in a fourthworldcountry would an armed group that is supposed to keep order attack a vulnerable gentleman who was literally just standing by. Never going to the US as a tourist, until they fix their mess.

Fire them & 57 other officers wanting to resign. Zero tolerance for police brutality, dishonesty (they said he tripped & fell) & misconduct. Zero. We need to stop treating officers like angels forced into a dangerous job. It's competitive/desirable. BlackLivesMattertoronto

They can charge/allege anything, but the video shows the man wasn't just walking along the street. As much as my heart is with the man, ppl can't just walk up to the police, refused to take orders to back away and then gesture or research towards their weapons. BlueLivesMatter

Hey

Yes, this is a terrible seen but, what I fined even more terrible is Canadian MSM has all but ignored the anniversary of the D-Day Landing And all those who gave their lives so we may enjoy the freedom we have today. I have seem one tweet from CTV and nothing from the rest.

Cops think they are dealing out punishment! They think they are teaching lessons , to do that you must be judge and jury.

Yes, BLM! I couldn't breath since Sept, 2018 in the condo building of 160 Vanderhoof Ave, Toronto. I absolutely believe Prime minister Trudeau yesterday said that the Canada exist social system race discriminations. White supremacy, racism already existed in the condo for long.

PoliceBrutality PoliceBrutalityPandemic not about black lives matter! If we don’t get to the real issues we never will !! AllLivesMattter

Good thing for citizen journalists They are far more effective in today’s society than the traditional media.

Buffalo, N.Y. tactical team quits to protest colleagues’ suspension for pushing senior man to ground: reportsEntire Buffalo, N.Y. police tactical team quits unit to protest colleagues’ suspension for pushing 75-year-old man to ground: reports Nice misleading headline . Do better! These officers didn’t quit their jobs. They quit the crowd control team they were on because they’re not allowed to beat up old people. FakeNewsAlert Their superintendent/chief can turn things around quickly by accepting their resignations from the tactical team AND NOT replacing them. Overnight, that would demilitarize the Buffalo police. A crisis is not to be wasted. 59 bad cops just outed themselves.

NYC calmer as Buffalo police draw ire for elderly protester's injuryThe latest night of protests in New York City sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police was markedly calmer, while video of a police officer appearing to shove an elderly protester who falls and cracks his head in Buffalo drew widespread condemnation. This was completely uncalled for. I'm sure the officers will claim they felt their lives were in danger etc. They tried to claim he slipped and fell earlier when it was all caught on cell phone video. You can say white man.... if he was black you would never have called him an elderly protester. New York isn't 'calmer,' they've suspended constitutional rights and due process to kettle and detain peaceful protesters using violent armaments and beatings. How can this be described as calm?
