'PRETTY SCARY SITUATION': Driver OK after transport wheel hits car on Hwy. 401 Via JaneCStevenson

Mark, identified only by his first name, told OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a video posted to social media that he reacted quickly as he saw the wheel coming towards his car.As the Canadian national soccer teams head to their respective FIFA World Cups, Derek Van Diest is on the scene to cover all the action. Expect expert insights and analysis in your inbox daily throughout the tournaments, and weekly on Thursdays for the rest of the season.

Calling it a “pretty scary situation,” Schmidt noted that the wheel “fortunately only took the side of — quite the damage.”“Check those wheel fasteners if you had them changed recently because of a brake job or because of the seasonal tire change,” he said. “You have to check your wheel nuts and make sure they’re properly torqued and tightened down and are not going to fail. This could have been deadly. And Mark is lucky that it didn’t go right into the occupant compartment.”

Last month, a 77-year-old driver was killed on the QEW when a tire from a boat trailer hit his car near Winston Churchill Blvd.
