Cost of rail service between West Shore and Victoria would be “profound,” says premier

Premier John Horgan says he is “not confident” that it will be possible to revive rail service on Vancouver Island.

Horgan spoke at a news conference Wednesday announcing a new post-secondary education campus in the West Shore, where he said one of the questions was how to manage and enhance transportation options for the region. One of his first meetings with Langford Mayor Stew Young was about how to get trains running again. But many years later, there has been no progress, Horgan said.

The existing rail line is almost completely pooched but the corridor has endless potential. Do NOT turn this into another bike lane…I repeat, not more bike lanes.

It would only be achievable if the NDP saw it as a political gain.

Yes they need the money to maintain the Malahat every year. You can’t say not enough ridership when the train left Victoria in the morning once and came back in the end of the day. The island needs rail service so next time Malahat is closed the island life doesn’t shut down.

Very disappointing that Horgan would say this. Lack of vision for the future of the Island.

Rip it up. It’s day is done. Use the right of way for something else

I live right by that line. But I figure it would take a billion dollars to rebuild and electrify from Victoria to Alberni & Courtenay. 1/5th of the ties, all bridges, every station plus parking, and all road crossings. Clearing overgrown trees?

He’s right

In 2011, due to the disrepair of the railway, VIA Rail and Southern Railway suspended the Dayliner passenger service, the Victoria–Courtenay train indefinitely. Cost to maintain and lack of ridership were key factors. Let it go - It is not a solution

I like the other ideas for the rail line. It can be used for other things other than trains. The money can be spent better. There federal funding available for alternate forms of transportation.

Said it before and I’ll say it again. Hard to believe $110m can be spent on the Johnson St bridge but no money available to fix the rail line. VictoriaBC

When he can't see a 4 lane road through or around goldstream why think he can see rail..

Horgan asked about doctor adB.C.'s Ministry of Health has been under fire after a Vancouver Island couple resorted to buying a newspaper ad to find a doctor. I’ve been trying to find a relative a family physician in BC for about four years now. Tried everything. “Universal” access to health care is a fairy tale in Canada. I've been sending personal letters to doctors. I have a chronic disease, chronic pain (prescript for morphine) and depression. Honestly I feel it's DANGEROUS for someone with a diagnosed chronic illness to not have a dr. I'm 40 days away from running out of morphine. I'm scared. Let me know if it works. I going to put an add up here in Ontario if it does. Ps could google maps put a closed logo on emergency’s that are closed in Ontario. Kind of a guessing thing right now

Has a socialist ever fixed a problem in the long term without simply extracting more wealth from somewhere else? He is a disgrace to his office. Glad he can get the care he needs. A pitty he doesn’t care about all those that once believed in his party An elitist comment from someone who never has to worry about having a doctor for himself and his family.
