The byelection is to fill the seat left vacant by former B.C. Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson.

The byelection will be the first election to use digital tabulators to count paper ballots and laptops to look up voters, instead of the traditional paper binders. Elections B.C. said the new tools should make it easier to cast a vote and quicker to report election night results.The B.C. NDP have tapped Jeanette Ashe, chair of the political science department at Douglas College, to represent their party in the race. Ashe is married to Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart.

“We’re excited about using new technology to help British Columbians vote,” Anton Boegman, B.C.’s chief electoral officer, said in a statement. “These changes will make our electoral process more accessible and efficient, and help us provide better service to voters.”Article content The nomination period runs until April 9 at 1 p.m., with advance voting from April 22-27. Elections B.C. will send information about where to vote to every registered voter in the Vancouver-Quilchena before advance voting starts.
