Shortall said he’s going to meet with the town council and discuss it with them, to see if they had any plans for how it could be best used for the town, but since he wasn’t expecting to get a church, he hadn’t really given it much thought. One of the most prominent properties that was on the block, the Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist complex, was sold to a joint bid committee comprising the Basilica Heritage Foundation, St. Bonaventure’s College Inc. and the St. Bon’s Forum Corporation for over $3 million.
Three other churches were purchased by groups of citizens connected to the parishes and are expected to continue to be used as places of worship. “We bid solely on the church, and about an acre and a half, which is really just the area around the church,” he said. “We were fortunate that our bid was accepted and now we’re working to do everything to get it done.”
St. Patrick’s church in downtown St. John’s, a neo-gothic building that was completed in 1881 and took decades to build, was sold to Howard Real Estate Holdings Inc., which has local business owner Frank Howard listed as a director. The Association for New Canadians has also purchased a church, St. Pius X, along with the adjoining school. The non-profit has been using the school in the east end of St. John’s for about 20 years as its home base, where it provides a variety of services, including childcare and language classes for new Canadians.

These shows are always bouncing around trying to find facilities and we’ve been looking for a couple of years for the right building.”
“We were just hoping someone didn’t buy it and tear it down or turn it into something else,” he said. “But then the parcels came out, and we looked more closely.”
