Justine Lorch, who is actively looking for housing in P.E.I., says finding a pet-friendly place to live is essential, as getting rid of her cats Fury and Tika is not an option. - ContributedCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — With potential pet protections being voted down in the legislature, some current and new tenants in Prince Edward Island may have to make the difficult decision between their furry companions or housing.
“Especially if you are asking about pets, like if they don’t list and you are going in and asking about it,” she said. “Usually, it will be a very short ‘no pets’ or you just won’t hear back.”The landlords who do reply have been easy to work with and were up front with what they are looking for in a tenant. However, Lorch said more often than not, there is a push to not allow pets in rentals.
With her current employment contract wrapping up at the end of December, Lorch said she is now under a time limit to find a place to rent. If she was asked to give up her cats, Fury and Tika, in order to find a place, Lorch said she would never consider it. Most of the animals were surrendered because their owners were unable to find affordable, pet-friendly housing, she said, but some were given up after tenants were told to choose between multiple pets.
Overall, the shelter has seen an increase in general intake over the last few years and expects it to continue climbing in the future, said Travis.
