Vancouver's most fascinating culture-makers take the stage September 15 for the return of PechaKucha. vancouver

Share Tweet Share Pin Pecha Kucha may not have been created here — it’s a concept of super-quick presentations, pioneered by the Japanese design community — but it sure knows how to encapsulate the spirit of our fair city.

On September 15 at the Rio Theatre, we'll see the 51st such event here in Vancouver, but the first in more than two years thanks to you-know-what. And the list of speakers makes it truly feel like a homecoming. As per PK custom, each speaker will take the stage to showcase 20 slides on a topic or passion of their choosing, with just 20 seconds per slide. It makes the whole night move along at a dynamic clip, and with a cast of admirable design minds, writers, academics, architects, and chefs, some fascinating insights are sure to unfold.

We’ve spotted some familiar names on this list — characters who have graced the pages of Western Living and Vancouver magazine over the years. Curated and produced by former Western Living Fashion Designer of the Year Becki Chan, the lineup includes furniture designer Henry Norris , architect Rafael Santa Ana , pastry chef Betty Huang , and Vancouver Indigenous fashion Week founder Joleen Mitton… all in all, it’s a who’s who of the city’s arts and culture scene.

We'll be in the audience cheering on these inspiring makers and minds from the crowd. The city’s back, baby!
