A key federal benefit for Canadians out of work, or seeing large drops in their earnings, in the COVID-19 pandemic has paid out over $40 billion in emergency aid.

Federal figures posted Monday show payments from Canada Emergency Response Benefit now total $40.33 billion to 8.21 million separate applicants, pushing the program further beyond its $35-billion budget.

However, billions could be clawed back next year when the government taxes the earnings and recoups improperly paid benefits. The details came out the same day the federal government opened applications for a commercial rent assistance program, which saw Prime Minister Justin Trudeau repeat a plea for landlords to apply for the aid.

Landlords with up to 10 eligible tenants located in Atlantic Canada, British Columbia, Alberta or Quebec could apply online Monday. Applications for landlords in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and the territories will open Tuesday, while landlords with more than ten tenants can apply later this week.

How about we open the fucking economy instead of pretending that everyone's going to die from a virus with a 99.74 survival rate, this is absolute insanity at this point, bankrupting the country is not helping anyone

Hurry up and make a vaccine already! I'd rather be going to work

Please publish one single idea from the Trudeau reelection campaign going on now as to how they plan on getting Canada's economy going again, too early to ask, or should we wait for the trillion dollar deficit mark?

How much longer are we going to sit at home?

Yup we got an endless supply of it. Any foreign nation feel free to apply for our tax dollars I'm sure Trudeau will pay for it. What a fool.

Furloughed workers with COVID-19 fears can't just stay home and collect CERB - Macleans.caIf you have been temporarily laid off because of COVID19 and your boss asks you to go back to work and you say no, then you’re essentially quitting your job Who doesn’t want to go back to work? Being concerned about contracting COVID-19 doesn’t not necessarily equal not wanting to go back to work and continuing to collect $2000 per month from the government. It equals being concerned about contracting the virus. See the difference? The lockdown was supposed to buy time to establish a system of testing and contact tracing for infected. Instead they exposed the 'essential,' laid off thousands, and now if workers refuse to go back to work and risk infection, they'll be 'quitting' and ineligible for UI. shame General Strike Now! Workers should not have to choose between life and a job. If anything shows us that capitalism is a complete failure it is the policy to herd people back to work in the face of a pandemic. Capitalists can't stand the cost of doing business. General Strike now!
