SYDNEY, N.S. — Patrons at a Cape Breton KFC location were quick to help a man who was choking and unable to breathe.
Lafford and Bernard-Lafford, who are firefighters with the Wagmatcook Volunteer Fire Department, said they were told there was no first aid kit on site when they asked for one. "In all of our restaurants, we are 100 per cent in adherence with all of the government requirements, all of our staff is provided with basic first aid knowledge through policies that are provided us through Yum and each employee would have to complete all of those policies within 14 days of being employed," she said.
"I can't speak to that specific instance because I don't know exactly what was spoken at that time," she said."All that I can state is that we absolutely have a first aid kit." They were in the dining area of the KFC and the man was sitting in a booth. Lafford said he noticed the man had some drink coming out of the side of his mouth and asked him if he was OK. The man didn't respond.
"It was called out that there were already two medically trained professionals that were dealing with the situation," said Myshrall. Both Lafford and Bernard-Lafford said staff didn't seem to understand they had to call 911 and had to be asked multiple times before they did.
