On Roberto Luongo's big night in Florida, the FlaPanthers came away with a win vs. the CanadiensMTL.

On a night when Roberto Luongo’s number was retired, the former Florida goalie gave the team a pep talk during a pregame ceremony — and the Panthers took it to heart.

The win moved Florida three points behind idle Toronto for third place in the Atlantic Division — with the Panthers owning a game in hand. They are also three points out of a wild-card spot. "One hundred per cent. I was five or six in his first year as a pro, so I’ve watched him my entire life being a goalie. He’s definitely been a role model for me," said the 25-year-old goalie, who has a .936 save percentage.

Florida’s penalty kill gave the team a big boost when it killed off 2:50 of a four-minute, double-minor penalty by Dominic Toninato. Ekblad’s ensuing high-sticking infraction gave Montreal 1:10 of a 5-on-3 advantage, but the Panthers killed all three penalties.

FlaPanthers CanadiensMTL Roberto is an incredible goalie and person. I never understood why people didn't give him the credit and respect he deserved. He won the Gold for our country, and went to a game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals. All in short order. Roberto is awesome.
