Teala Dawn Poirier, 32, pleaded guilty to theft and breach of probation on Sept. 25 in provincial court in Charlottetown. Poirier appeared in court by video from the Provincial Correctional Centre. On Thursday, Aug. 31 at around 10:45 a.m., Poirier was at the Dairy Queen restaurant on University Avenue and took an ice cream cake from the freezer, said Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald. She then sat down at a table and started eating the ice cream cake with her hands.

While speaking to Charlottetown police, Poirier suddenly picked up the ice cream cake and peeled off the cardboard base. She then held the ice cream cake in her bare hands. Poirier also stood up on her seat and tried to access the cashier area.Poirier was arrested and rambled to police about numerous topics that made no sense to the officers, said MacDonald.

Poirier has been in custody since her arrest that morning. Prior to the guilty pleas and sentencing, Poirier had undergone a psychiatric assessment and was found fit to stand trial. Even so, MacDonald noted that Poirier has mental health and substance use issues that are motivating her criminal history. Poirier added that at the time of the Dairy Queen offences, she wasn't on drugs but rather hadn't eaten or drunk anything for two days.
