This is the final part of a three-part series following the story of a migrant worker and her efforts to get an open permit to work in P.E.I. after filing a complaint against her employer.MONTAGUE, P.E.I. – A temporary foreign worker in P.E.I. is calling for increased protections for other workers like her as legislation that would do just that has yet to pass into law.

P.E.I. migrant worker speaks out, part 1: Temporary foreign worker files complaint about sexual harassment in the workplaceMeng recently decided to share her story with SaltWire, saying that she wanted to raise awareness about the need for more support for temporary foreign workers like herself, ensuring they have basic human rights, protection and access to fairness and justice.was granted royal assent in the P.E.I. legislature in 2022, but after two years, it hasn’t come into force.

The Cooper Institute has worked with migrant workers in P.E.I. for years and has undertaken various projects and reports to highlight concerns regarding the protection and treatment of temporary foreign workers. The act will also prohibit employers and recruiters from actions that threaten foreign workers, such as deportation threats, withholding important documents like passports, or intimidating workers from speaking out about employment issues.In a statement to SaltWire on April 11, the Department of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population said the act’s proclamation will come into force in phases.

“To successfully implement this act, the province recognizes that it will take time, logistical planning and operational changes by all parties involved,” the statement reads.
