The Juno Award-winning R&B singer performed the national anthem before the game in Salt Lake City, Utah and altered one line to recognize the Indigenous peoples who lived on the land before European settlers.
The new lyrics appeared to draw a largely positive reaction on social media where some viewers praised Black’s revised lyrics.Rapper Chuck D, a member of U.S. hip-hop group Public Enemy, commended Black’s performance: “My girl @JullyBlack just kicked the most soulful O Canada I ever heard at 2023 #NBAAllStar game,” he tweeted.

As an immigrant the first line of our National Anthem means that I now call Canada my home and that others of birth-right can also call Canada their ‘native’ land. By substituting ‘on’ for ‘and’ changes the meaning of ‘native’ which then refers to ‘indigenous’ lands.
Not so great…it reads as if the National Anthem is a product of non-indigenous people who have made their homes ON native land! This may very well be true, but if the singer meant to edit the Anthem, the 1st Nations would not put it this way, that their Home is ON their land!
