The government is refusing to disclose material to a federal court that relates to its unprecedented decision to use the Emergencies Act to stop the so-called “Freedom Convoy” that blockaded border crossings and occupied the streets around Parliament Hill.

OTTAWA—The government is refusing to disclose material to a federal court that relates to its unprecedented decision to use the Emergencies Act to stop the so-called “Freedom Convoy” protests that blockaded border crossings and occupied the streets around Parliament Hill.

The refusal to disclose relates to the foundation’s push for a judicial review of the Emergencies Act invocation, and is separate from scrutiny by a parliamentaryand a public inquiry that will study the decision. The issue strikes at the question of how much information will be made public about the government’s first-ever use of the Emergencies Act this year.

“We think that’s a better way to reconcile the competing concerns of, on the one hand, preserving cabinet confidence, and on the other hand ensuring that the government operates according to the law,” Choudhry told the Star.

Lol because they trampled on Canadians rights and they don’t want to admit it.

Are we no longer an open transparent democracy. I guess this will also not be accessible via Access to Information, my parents left a 3rd world country which had all great laws on the books for their glorious nation but were not enforced. Is Canada headed there?

Ah, Toronto Star trying to inflame the crappy trucker ‘freedom’ thing when Trudeau did his job, and defused the situation despite Ford and police paralysis. OF COURSE he had to use the big stick, but it was totally within the bounds of how the law was created - with agreement .

So much for Trudeau’s open and transparent government he promised. Not the first lie he ever told or the last. Even die hard Liberal supporters and left wing zealots have to admit that this is wrong.

I didn't agree with the trucker protest because of how much the messaging and focus changed. That being said, there are some real concerns about the fact that Canadians had their bank accounts frozen just for supporting it.

It's called 🇨🇦's Emergency Act because fordnation decided not to enforce Ontario's Emergency Act!

Abuse of power. Banana republic.

Of course they are cause it was an abuse of power

Corrupt federal government = you cannot call Canada a democracy.

And the court should uphold that refusal. CCF is just another right-wing dark group trying to grift Cdns to support their propaganda efforts. Can't read behind your paywall but the CCF is as non-partisan as the Fraser Institute (iow not at all). Hope your article made that clear.

WHAT IS TRUDEAU HIDING

Ask fordnation why he didn’t do anything. Then requested assistance from the federal government

How about Russia invading Ukraine.. and needed to move military equipment and vehicles on the highways and in-between provinces... Sounds like a sound reason to me anyways.

Canada is run by femme boygirls

Let's move on

The conservative mouthpiece spews again

Hey it was the only thing that ended it.

Of course they are refusing. They had no reason to envoke the act. Everything that was said by BOTH the Liberal Government and the media were proven lies so far. By allowing the media to be disclosed would solidify their lie.

Clear overreach of power. No transparency or even an attempt to explain the decision. Honk honk.

Did anyone expect anything else?

Not surprised at all 😏

Wow im surprised you are covering this. They won’t answer any questions about their misuse of this act because of cabinet secrecy. Absolutely ridiculous.

It's the government, they don't need to disclose every little thing! Let them protect us there is certain secrets that need to be kept! trustjustin

let's move on....

The government refuses to provide evidence because the only justification they had was BlackFace's personal vendetta against FreedomConvoy protest

No government agency is above the law That includes the prime minister

Ah how to trust the attack article against Trudeau from you guys

I have NO problem with that. Illegal blocking of our borders and etc is not OK. Move on and let’s get working.

Sounds like obstruction of justice to me, but I'm no lawyer

Even diehard liberals and left wing zealots have to admit that this is wrong, especially since Trudeau promised an open and transparent government.

So about that accountability…..TrudeauMustGo TrudeauForTreason trudeaudictatorship

Hostile Takeover: USA Canada Purchase Benefits: –13 new states –Merged militaries –$569B tax revenue –$1.64T GDP –Eliminated trade inefficiencies –10.2% pop. increase –Rare earth resources Proposed Offer: 3T USD to all Canadian adults upon completion =$99,087.49 ea.

So much for Trudeau’s open and transparent government he promised. Not the first lie he ever told or the last.

What grounds , ? Are we not a ' Country of laws !

it was top secret did you not read that they kept special ops investigators on alert the whole time. everyone that attended had their whole life investigated. they even went knocking on peoples doors to ask them if they were donating to the convoy they would be charged. they knew

The same foundation that went to court to privatize healthcare based on constitutional law years ago. Think tank charity designed to shape public opinion. This article is a hit piece.

Lmao because the only reason they needed it was to force tow trucks to take action and its an embarrassing look 😂

Interesting, what in the world are they trying to hide?

And people are ok with this is Fuking stupid ..open ur Fuking eyes 👀

Refusing to provide it to some random charity? Specifically one that’s been fighting for things like privatized healthcare? All disguised as the “patients right to pay for healthcare”?

So much for the Judiciary’s constitutional check on the Executive branch’s power.. When did our top courts become toothless?!

Families of N.S. shooting victims, law firm boycott inquiry proceedings in protestAs the inquiry into Nova Scotia’s mass shooting moves its public proceedings to Truro, many of the family members affected by the tragedy and their lawyers are boycotting the proceedings over the next week. The RCMP are utterly pathetic 'The decision comes after it was announced some senior RCMP witnesses would avoid cross-examination before the inquiry' Be careful what you ask for! If you're so fragile that testifying about your own actions at an inquiry would 're-traumatize' you, then perhaps you shouldn't have gone into law-enforcement in the first place: a career where you are virtually guaranteed to come into contact with some traumatizing shit.
