A combined $147-million from the federal and Manitoba governments will help improve the Hudson Bay Railway, which is the only land link to Churchill, a Manitoba town on the coast of Hudson Bay

The federal and Manitoba governments announced a combined $147-million Wednesday to support a rail line through northern Manitoba with a history of service disruptions and delays.

The rail line brings people and goods to several northern communities and is the only land link to Churchill, a town on the coast of Hudson Bay known for polar bears. A consortium that includes First Nation communities, Arctic Gateway Group, took over ownership with federal help in 2018. Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson said a more reliable railway could also lead to energy exports through Churchill.
