The boy’s first bike was a gift through the Big Give charity, police said, but on Aug. 3 it was stolen from his Jockvale Road home.
The local neighbourhood resource team was called in to search for it, but there weren’t many leads, police said“Like most kids, he loves riding his bike, and it’s a big deal that he doesn’t have it anymore,” said one officer on the NRT. “From the surveillance video, the person who stole it looks too big to be riding this bike and probably doesn’t know what he’s taken away from this boy.”
So, the officers decided to chip in together and buy the boy a new bike. They reached out to Luke Dagenais at the Canadian Tire Barrhaven, who police say generously provided a bike at cost, along with a helmet, lock, bell and light.“We registered the bike on 529 Garage, and this is a great reminder to all bike owners to register their bikes too,” police said.

Soooo... basically what you're saying is, once again cops can't actually prevent or solve crimes, so taxpayers are on the hook for even more money to make up to someone for the fact they couldn't do the job they claim they need so much money already to do.
So they didn't solve the crime, which is what their job was in this case. Good case for defunding the police and replacing them with a children's bike purchasing program.

while you’re doing this whole poverty porn routine, know that (1) the cops didn’t actually solve the crime, and (2) one of the cops doing the promotion earns nearly $200k/yr would be easier/cheaper to employ fewer cops and just fund replacement bikes for underprivileged kids 👍🏼

3 cops posing with a bike eh! You really don’t need to capture good deeds unless you are doing it for PR. It’s ok to do something nice and shut the fuck up about it. You don’t need to do this. There are other ways to get public trust and support. This is embarrassing for OPS.
And yet...
For the amount of the increased police budgets every damn year they could buy every single child in Ottawa a bike and it wouldn’t even make a dent in the budget, even though this is a nice gesture.
