Canada cannot ban entry to individuals covered by sanctions without amending the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

Canada has sanctioned the Russian defence sector and hundreds of individuals and entities while at the same time sending weapons to Ukraine. Earlier this month during a trip to Kyiv, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised more weapons and equipment.Article content

Canada cannot ban entry to individuals covered by sanctions without amending the so-called Immigration and Refugee Protection Act , a spokesman for the ministry said. The changes would allow the Canada Border Services Agency to deny entry to, and remove, people who have been sanctioned, and would enable Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada officials to deny visas.
